Can there be anything worse that having a guest come in your home and immediately say “Oh, you have a cat?” Oops. That is a good indication you may not be maintaining the litter box as clean as possible.
We have 5 cats and individuals who visit our house for the very first time are always SURPRISED when they visit. Having had cats for over 25 years, I have tried just about everything to make the job of cat care simpler. Here are just two of my best organizing tips for keeping the litter boxes clean and the home smelling clean with as little time and effort as you can.
Avoid putting the litter box within your bathroom if you don’t absolutely need to! The litter becomes anywhere. If you have to keep it there, buy a fully enclosed litter box with an opening for your cat to walk through. They’ll track litter outside the box though. The best place I have found to keep the litter box would be in a little closet with cleaning materials, or in an infrequently used region of the home. When there is a door, make certain that you keep the door cracked open. Putting a very long item such as a roll of gift wrap or shelf paper onto one of the shelves works well to keep the door from being accidentally closed. Or better yet, remove the carpeting if at all possible. Try to obtain a litter box that has high walls and a dome or cover.
Keep a handheld vacuum useful to clean out the region around the box regularly. Store the vacuum cleaner on a plate or hang it on a wall in the cupboard. Think about keeping an excess pair of batteries and charger useful as well.
Fill your box half full with litter. Among the most frequent mistakes people make is not using enough clutter in the box. Cat’s like an extremely clean box, if there isn’t enough clutter, they can go beyond the box. And if they use the box with no enough litter, it is going to smell worse.
Scoop frequently. Make the task easier by keeping a large scooper hanging near the box. Consider keeping a diaper genie handy for disposing of the litter. Keeping a grocery bag holder nearby is also a significant help. Every single day, scoop the pet waste into a bag, double bag it, tie up it airtight and set it in a covered trash container or a diaper genie.
Keep a roll of paper towels and spray cleaner near the litter box. If it’s in a closet, use a paper towel holder that screws to the door and hang the paper towels on the inside of the doorway. Or receive a container of pop-up wipes. I use the wipes wash the floor around the litter box and to place clean the actual litter box between cleanings.
Drain the box entirely once per month. Dump the clutter into one of the handy grocery bags. Utilize your paper towels or a disposable pop-up cleaning product like Clorox Wipes easy to clean out the litter box along with the surrounding floor. When you’re done, throw the towels or wipes in with the clutter, tie up the bag tight and ditch it in the garbage!
Hope this helps!…
